We reprint the inside of page two of the “Illinois State Journal” for Saturday, August 14, 1858. It shows the schedule for the upcoming Lincoln & Douglas debates, set to commence in Ottawa a week later. All the sites are listed, along with the rules for the “political discussions”. It also lists the dates and towns where Lincoln would speak on his own. Even though Lincoln did not actively campaign when nominated for President, he apparently had a hectic speaking schedule in the senatorial contest of 1858. According to the paper, he was accompanied on some of these “solo” appearances by Senator Lyman Trumbull, the fellow who beat Lincoln out for the senatorial nomination in 1854. Douglas and Trumbull represented Illinois in the U. S. Senate in 1858.
