Schultz Auctions of Upsula, MN held a sale on March 21st that contained many “historical” and Civil War-related items. Unfortunately, the two Lincoln campaign flags they offered were totally bogus. As with many such items, the fakers take old flags (sometimes not even of the period) and add stenciled inscriptions. The Lincoln & Hamlin version sold onsite for $9,440 and the Lincoln & Johnson version went to $12,980. These should never have been offered in the first place. Unfortunately, many auctioneers view themselves simply as brokers for the sale of merchandise, offering material as-is, where-is, all sales final. As Sgt. Schultz used to exclaim, “I know NOTHING!”
