An eBay vendor recently listed a sixth plate tintype of Lincoln after the Preston Butler portrait. The original portrait was an ambrotype. This is a modern tintype copy. If real, the opening bid of $1,500 would have been a bargain. Fortunately, the collecting community recognized it for what it was and didn’t “take the bait”. It failed to sell but, like the proverbial “bad penny”, is sure to surface again. In fact, the vendor has relisted it.
