Based on some information posted online and an inquiry to your editor, it appears that the Washington, D. C. Lincoln funeral program comes in two versions. The first has a Mount Pleasant Mills watermark. The second, possibly printed later using the original type on laid paper has a Whiting Paper Co. watermark. According to the online vendor, a letter from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum (July 25, 2025) states that this alternate version is a “nearly identical match” to originals in their collection, the Library of Congress and Cornell University. The museum concludes that this second version was printed shortly after 1865 using the original block, but on higher-quality watermarked rag paper. Paper experts at Crane Currency determined the sheet is machine-made rag paper with a dandy-roll watermark typical of late 1800s production (as early as 1886). Aging, toning and fibers are fully consistent with 19th-century manufacture and storage. The Whiting Paper Company incorporated in 1865. That leaves open the possibility that both versions were printed in 1865. The “jury is still out” and each buyer must make their own judgments in the matter.
