Suspect Lincoln

This Isn’t Fooling Anyone

The line between a decorative piece and an outright fake is sometimes hard to pinpoint. A case-in-point is this 30” x 17” wooden sign decorated with an eagle holding a riband reading “Lincoln & Hamlin”. Offered by Hyde Park Country Auctions of Poughkeepsie, NY on December 30, 2022, the description indicated it  might date from 1860, but with the disclaimer that dating was problematic. It had little or no aging and the design and color scheme were not consistent with a dating of 1860. In fact, there was no way it was made in 1860. Bidders likely realized this as it only sold for $625.
