Suspect Lincoln

Twice As [Not] Nice

December 28, 2019

Rock Island Auctions of Rock Island, Illinois typically sells military items. Their June 30th sale had a pair of Lincoln campaign flags. Measuring approximately 35″ x 25″ each, they were individually framed. There were 35 stars on each (a suspicious anomaly vis-a-vis the Lincoln & Hamlin flag) with stenciled lettering. Like so many other stenciled flags that have been appearing in the market, it is very unlikely these are original campaign flags. They may date from the 1860’s, but the inscriptions are more-than-likely recent enhancements, in the opinion of practically all “in the know”. If real, they would be worth $30,000-$40,000. They sold for $5,015.
